The tourist object of the Kerta Gosa park, sometimes written as Kertha Gosa, used to be part of the Klungkung royal building complex. The Klungkung royal complex was built in 1686 by the first power holder, Ida I Dewa Agung Jambe. But in 1908, almost all of the Klungkung royal buildings were destroyed by the Dutch colonial invasion.

There are three buildings from the Klungkung royal complex that still remain and were not destroyed during the Dutch colonial invasion. The three buildings include:

The Medal Agung building (the main gate of the Klungkung kingdom).
Bale Kambang (a building surrounded by a pond called Taman Gili).
Building / Bale Kertha Gosa.
Bale Kertha Gosa was not immediately built in 1686 at the same time as the construction of the Klungkung kingdom. However, Bale Kertha Gosa was built at the end of the 18th century, and its location is at the northeastern tip of the Klungkung royal area.

In ancient times the function of the Bale Kertha Gosa was a place for discussion regarding the situation of security, justice and prosperity in the royal territory of Bali, and in ancient times it also functioned as a place for courts in Bali.

The main thing that attracts tourist attractions in the Kerta Gosa park is the architecture of the building which characterizes Balinese architecture in the 17th century. The beauty of the architecture is especially evident in the Bale Kambang building, which is surrounded by a pond called Taman Gili. Because there is a pond surrounding Bale Kambang, to be able to enter the Bale Kambang building area, visitors will pass through a brick bridge.

The uniqueness of the Bale Kambang and Bale Kertha Gosa buildings is in the roof ceiling of the building. On the ceiling of the building’s roof there is a Wayang painting depicting the cases being tried, as well as the type of punishment that will be received, if you make a mistake.

In addition, the Wayang painting also tells about the law of Karma and Reward. The law of cause and effect of the good and bad of human actions, which are carried out during his life. As well as Wayang paintings also depict the reincarnation of humans into the world to atone for sins from their actions (reincarnation).

The wayang paintings on the roof of Bale Kertha Gosa and Bale Kambang are examples of the uniqueness and characteristics of wayang paintings in Kamasan Village, Klungkung.

Apart from these two buildings, in the tourist area of Kertha Gosa, to be precise in the western area, there is a museum which is also busy with tourists visiting it. This museum stores historical objects from the Klungkung kingdom, and objects used by traditional Balinese courts in ancient times.

The Kerta Gosa tourist spot is located in the city center of Klungkung Regency. The location is right in front of the Klungkung Regency Regent’s office. The distance you will take is about 40 km from the city of Denpasar, to the east by crossing the Prof. Dr. Ida Bagus Mantra by pass.

If you depart from the Ubud Monkey Forest area, heading to Kerta Gosa will cover a distance of 23 kilometers and take 50 minutes.
